# Setting Audience Column Visibility

To set the Audience Column Visibility for a Parent Segment, you create a policy where you select visibility types for each attribute and behavior in that Parent Segment.

## Setting Attribute and Behavior Visibility Types

1. Open **TD Console**.
2. Navigate to **Control Panel** > **Policies**
3. Select **Add Policy**.

1. Name the policy. Select **Save**.

1. Select the policy you created from the policies list.
2. Select Permissions from the Policy details.

1. Scroll down to **Audience Studio**. Select **Limited Access**.

1. Select a Parent Segment from the Parent Segment Permissions dropdown. Select **Add**.

1. The Parent Segment shows in the Audience Studio permissions panel.

1. Select the pencil icon next to the Parent Segment or select **Default visibility type**.

1. Under Column visibility control, select a default visibility type for the Parent Segment. (The default visibility type is Clear. We recommend setting it to Blocked.)

1. After selecting the default visibility type, select **Reset all to default**. If you do not reset, only new columns default to your selected visibility type.

1. Set the visibility type for specific columns (based on your company's privacy requirements) using the dropdown. Select **Save**.

1. Select **Applied To** from the policy details.

1. Select **Apply policy** to add or remove users from the policy.

1. Select **Save**.


## Check each User’s Visibility of a Parent Segment

1. Navigate to **Control Panel** > **Users**
2. Select the user.
3. Select Policies in the user details panel.

1. Select **Show All Permissions.** The All Permissions dialog opens. This example shows what visibility types have been selected for each attribute and behavior column for this user. You can view visibility types for all Parent Segments for which this user has permissions in this dialog.

1. Verify that the Column Visibility is set correctly for the user.
2. Select **Close**.


Important warning
We recommend verifying the effects of hiding PII columns by setting up a test policy and checking those [effects in the Audience Studio UI](/products/control-panel/security/policies/how-is-audience-studio-visibility-affected-by-column-visibility-types)

## Column Visibility Types

There are four column visibility types for Parent Segment attributes and behaviors. Each attribute and behavior can be labeled with one of the following:

* **Clear**
* **PII**
* **Blocked**


In general, the following restrictions apply for each column visibility type when users are viewing segment data in Audience Studio:

#### Clear

* Can see the individual value of the attribute/behavior in profile view
* Can see the aggregate value and listed possible values for that attribute/behavior in the Segment Editor
* Can use the attribute/behavior for building a segment rule
* Can include the attribute/behavior in a segment activation


#### PII

* Cannot see the individual value of the attribute/behavior in profile view
* Cannot see the aggregate value and listed possible values for that attribute/behavior in the Segment Editor
* Cannot use the attribute/behavior for building segment rule
* Can include the attribute/behavior in segment activation


#### Blocked

* Cannot see the individual value of the attribute/behavior in the profile
* Cannot see the aggregate value and listed possible values for that attribute/behavior in the Audience
* Cannot use the attribute/behavior for building segment rule
* Cannot include the attribute/behavior in segment activation or any backend action such as profiles API token, predictive scoring and A/B testing. Updates on the specific attribute/behavior is rejected.
